Sir Winston Churchill, a British politician and also the Prime Minister in the United Kingdom in two terms during the Second World War II (1940 – 1945) and after that (1951 – 1955) said that: "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”. I totally agree with him.
The sentence is similar to the idiom: “Is the glass half empty or half full?” or a common expression: “The optimist sees the doughnut; the pessimist the hole”. All of them are used to explain the way people perceive on events or objects and interpret the reality. Perception is unique to every individual. However, if we have a positive look on the problem, we can recognize its bright side. On the contrary, a pessimistic person can see risks and negative side. For instance, we are international students at the ALP; English, therefore, is our second language. Of course, we could not communicate as good as native speakers at the same age and the same knowledge. However, a pessimist’s perspective will be different from an optimist’s regarding to the thinking of their language ability. The optimist believes that he will use English as fluently as the native speaker one day. Therefore, he tries to use as much English as possible. Meanwhile, the pessimist thinks he might misunderstand that native speaker. So, he avoids communicating with those who speak English as much as he can. And how are the results? I am sure that you can answer yourself.
To me, I am not so optimistic that I could be an arrogant person, but not too pessimistic to expect the worst of people or of situations. When a problem happens, I always try to figure out possibilities and think of what I should do if an unexpected result comes. I think this way will help me act on my own initiative.
